1. Take CA-223 west for 10 miles (go straight through the roundabout at the halfway point), then get onto the Golden State Hwy heading north. Continue for 9 more miles, then take exit 23 around to Ming Ave, turn left, then turn left again onto Wible Rd. Take the overpass on Old Stine Belle Ter, then turn right onto McDonald Way. Turn right onto Stockdale Hwy, and right before the turn onto Griffiths St, we’re on the corner on your right, at 3873 Stockdale Hwy.
2. You could stay on Wible Rd until the next overpass, then tun left onto Brundage Ln. Do a U-turn at the intersection with McDonald Way, then find us right before the turn onto Griffiths St.

How Much Local History Do You Know?

The city of Arvin, located just southeast of Bakersfield, has deep roots that trace back to the early 20th century. Land sales in the area began in 1906, and by 1914, the Arvin Post Office was established—thanks to the efforts of Birdie Heard, who became the city’s first postmaster. Originally operating from her living room, the post office later moved to a local general store, which also served as the town’s first informal library until a Kern County Library branch opened in 1927. In 1960, Arvin was officially incorporated as a city and named after Arvin Richardson, the son of early settlers from San Bernardino.

Arvin has played a role in several notable events throughout California’s history. It was the site of a major agricultural strike in 1933, during which labor organizer Pedro Subia was tragically killed. That same year, the discovery of the Mountain View Oil Field spurred economic development, with many oil wells still surrounding the area today. During the 1930s and 1940s, Arvin’s open terrain made it a popular site for glider aviation and soaring championships, later commemorated by the National Soaring Museum.

The Arvin Migratory Labor Camp, established in 1937 as part of the New Deal, became a model for federally operated farm labor housing. Over the decades, the city has weathered natural disasters, including the 1952 Kern County earthquake and a severe dust storm in 1977. Despite these challenges, Arvin has grown into a strong, resilient community with a proud heritage rooted in agriculture, hard work, and perseverance.
