If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are 2 easy routes you could take, starting from the Beale Memorial Library.
- Head west on Truxton Ave, then turn left onto Chester Ave and right onto Brundage Ln. Continue past the overpass when it becomes Stockade Hwy, then do a U-turn at the intersection with McDonald Way and watch for us coming up on your right, just before the turn to Griffiths St.
- Instead, you could leave the library on Q St heading south, then turn right onto California Ave, then left onto Oak St. Turn right onto Stockade Hwy, then continue as in the first set of directions.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Bakersfield’s history is deeply rooted in its early encounters and developments, beginning with Spanish missionary Francisco Garcés’s exploration in 1776. He was the first European to visit the area, welcomed warmly by the Yokuts people. The region remained relatively isolated until post-Mexican War of Independence when it saw an influx of settlers, spurred by gold discoveries in California and locally along the Kern River in 1851, followed by oil in 1865. The initial settlement, known as Kern Island, evolved amidst challenges like flooding and malaria, laying the foundations for the future city.
The city of Bakersfield was officially named after Thomas Baker in 1863, a significant figure from the gold rush era who settled by the Kern River. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1873 and became the county seat by 1874, replacing Havilah. The early city faced several adversities including floods, malaria, and even the need to disincorporate in 1876 due to fiscal challenges, only to reincorporate in 1898. The establishment of rail connections, particularly the “People’s Railroad” in 1895, marked a critical development, enhancing Bakersfield’s connectivity and economic standing, setting the stage for its growth into a significant urban center in the region.
